How sync works

The app is local-first: your edits save on your device instantly and keep working offline, and Char syncs them in the background whenever they change. Your Library is stored in Char’s cloud and synced to every device where you sign in with the same account. Every plan includes sync; on Free it covers one device, and syncing between several devices is part of the Pro and Max plans. If two devices, or you and Charlie, edit the same Page at once, both changes are kept, even within one paragraph. An edit to a block that was deleted or moved elsewhere in the meantime is saved in the Page’s history so you can restore it. Charlie is cloud-first: it and your Schedules work on the cloud copy, so on Pro and Max they keep running with every device closed. Your Mac is needed only for work in its own apps and files. In the private beta, Char mobile opens the same Home as desktop, with its Cards, and lets you write and edit Pages and daily notes, including offline; they sync with Char desktop. Chats and Charlie’s other features are on Char desktop. To add a device, install Char on it and sign in with the same account. Settings → Sync shows the sync status, when this device last synced, and your devices. Make a small test page and confirm it appears on the second device before relying on sync for important work.

Who can read your Library

Char is not end-to-end encrypted. Char’s servers can read your Library so that Charlie can work with it and your other devices can sync it.
  • In transit: the app connects to Char’s servers over TLS (HTTPS), and Char’s servers reach their database and file storage over TLS.
  • At rest: your Library, chats and memory are kept in a database of their own for your account, encrypted at rest. Files and chat files are stored in Cloudflare R2, which encrypts them at rest. Backups of Charlie’s computer are also encrypted by Char with a key derived for your account. Deleting your account deletes your database and its files.
  • Per account: every read and write is tied to your signed-in account. Another account cannot read, list or change your data, and Char has no sharing between accounts.
  • Kept on your Mac: raw on-screen text from Awareness stays on your Mac. It is sent only to be summarized by AI; see Awareness and privacy.

Local access for other AI apps

To let another AI app read your pages on this computer, use local MCP from Settings → Developers or char-nightly mcp. That path stays on this device.

Hosted access for your own agents

To let your own AI agents work with your account from anywhere, connect them to Char’s hosted MCP at https://char.com/api/mcp and sign in with Char. With read access they can find and read your Pages. If you grant more, they can also create Pages and edit their blocks, and add and complete todos. They cannot delete a Page. Their edits sync like any other and show in Page history and History under the agent’s name.

Which feature do I need?

A copied app link does not automatically publish a page or grant another person access. Check the recipient’s access before depending on it.
