# Install Char

> Get access, open the app, and choose the permissions you need.

## Get the app

1. Go to [char.com](https://char.com).
2. If you do not have access yet, choose **Join private beta**.
3. If you already received an invitation, use the installation link and platform instructions in it.
4. Open Char and follow the setup screens.

Use the current installer supplied with your invitation. The public website is an access-request page, so you do not need to hunt for a download button there.

## Complete setup

Char may guide you through account sign-in, calendar connection, permissions, and storage. Follow the choices shown in your version of the app.

On macOS, a permission prompt can open System Settings. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen Char after changing a permission, do that before testing the feature again.

You can begin by writing a note. Add connected apps and other permissions when you want to use those features.

## What permissions are for

| Permission or connection | What it enables |
| ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Microphone | Features that listen to your voice |
| System audio | Features that need audio from other apps |
| Screen or accessibility access | Supported screen context and computer interactions |
| Calendar connection | Access to the calendars you connect |

See [Timeline and privacy](/timeline-and-privacy) before enabling activity capture. Permission to access something and choosing to capture it are separate controls.
