# Char handbook

> Start with a note. Turn it into a plan, a draft, or a finished task.

Char is an AI notepad. Use it to capture thoughts, keep track of work, and ask Charlie, your assistant, to help with the next step.

You do not need to set up integrations or activity capture to try your first note.

## Three things to know

* **Char** is the app. **Charlie** is the assistant inside it; you can change the assistant's name.
* A **page** holds your writing. A **chat** is a conversation with Charlie. Use **Ask Char** on a page when you want the conversation to include that page.
* Char is in private beta. These guides focus on the desktop experience; available controls can differ between app versions. [Get help](/help) if a step does not match your screen.
